roost question

I'm building my first chicken coop and have a question on what to use for the roost. Should I use round wood thingys (sorry I don't know what there called) or 2 by 4s? If I should use 2 by 4s should I put them flat or on there side? Also I live in a semi cold climate (nc) it gets close to freezing rarely if that helps. Thanks

From what I have read 2x4s or 2x3s work the best. Lay them flat so they can roost on the 3 1/2 or 2 1/2 inch side. Also round the edges a little so they are not sharp.
