roost

That's what I usually do, now. What I've seen them do if there's only one roost, is jockey for position at the favorite end.

I live near Eugene Oregon and we have a recycler called Bring - all kinds of building supplies etc - you can drop off stuff you don't need and buy stuff you do - usually very cheap - so today I stopped in looking for stuff to build my coop and found 2 long pieces of bannister (sp) wood - (about 10-12 feet each) one is round but larger than the closet dowels (and stronger) and the other is ovalish - but flat on top with rounded edges about 3" across and 1-1/2" tall - for roosts for $8 each!! I think they will work well and will give the birds choices for round verses flatter - you might check around your area for building material recyclers - (I also got 4- 2'x3' wood framed windows for $2.50 each and a good strong wooden screen door for my run for $10 - will have to change the srceen for the heavier stuff - but it's still a deal - I will be back soon for a door for the coop and other suppies.
