Roost ?

I have two 2x4's for roosts. They are 4" side flat, and the corners slightly rounded to prevent splinters. I feel that with our NE Ohio winters, the larger flat side gives the girls plenty of room to spread those toes flat and hide them under the feathers on their chests. If they "want" to grip, they just have to curl their toes over the front edge.

I've heard the 2x4 method using the flat side with the rounded edges...and I've also seen larger sticks or branches......and yes. The roosts should be higher than the nest boxes

I say 2x4 (that's what ours are.) they like them. I've also read on here that chickens for the most part like to sit and completly cover their feet and don't grab on like other wild birds do when they're roosting.
In the run we do have a downed limb that they occasionally sit and nap on etc but they prefer the 2x4 closest to the door. just whoever doesn't get there first is stuck with the limb.

I have two roosts inside my coop, a 2x4 one and a 2x2 one. Because chickens sit on the roost (rather than hold/grab on with their feet), I wouldn't use a round roost/perch. In my run I use 2 x 4s and a thick (3-4 inches) branch.

I use 2x2s and they work fine.
