my rooster is two years old and very healthy… he actually just had a wellness check at the vet a couple weeks ago and all was great.

today I noticed his comb looks like it has a bruise on it? he’s very well monitored everyday and we actually take a nap in the afternoons together everyday. He isn’t acting out of character at all. He’s up to his usual little routines. Is it possible for a roosters comb to get bruised?

He’s practically my son so I am really worried about my little buddy.

*** rooster does not live in the cage in the background, that’s our quarantine area in case we have a chicken in need***

Yes. Roosters can get bruised combs, typically from pecking by another bird.

The rest of his comb looks good. His color is good.

I'd just watch it to make sure it doesn't turn into fowl pox.

But it probably is a bruise he got from another bird...or once I caught my rooster trying to peck on the other side of the wire fence...and dragging his comb through the wire...which was the cause of his weirdly damaged comb.

My thoughts.

I thought if a chicken's comb turns purple it implies the Bird Flu? Well, maybe not. I wouldn't worry quite yet.

Different kind of "blue." Turning blue in that instance is from lack of oxygen, so the whole comb looks bluish-red. However, this bird has a bright eye, bright comb, bright wattles, with the tip of the comb alone looking darkish (a common place for injury).

We have a rooster like that. The rear portion of the comb will turn dark but it comes and goes. It's been going on for about six months. It started when a neighboring rooster came around. They never fought but were thinking about it. Then, it came back when the dog chased one of his hens. Then came back again when I moved one of his hens to a pen for a science project. I'm pretty sure there does not have to be any physical trama and it can appear because of some emotional incident. Maybe it's a cardiovascular issue or maybe it's just stress related. Being the lead rooster must be a stressful job.
