Last night, something or someone got into my coop. When I woke up this morning, the door was wide open. I got out to get them back inside and my rooster was outside by himself while my hens was in the coop. He didn't want to go back in, I had to forced him. Later that day I noticed that he was breathing heavily with is beak open, he looked like he was having a pannick attack almost. I would pick him up to calm him down, he was okay for a while and then he would do the same thing. I don't know if he got traumatized with what happen the night before or if he just doesn't feel well...i don't know what to do. Did that ever happened with anybody?

It sounds like something got into the coop. Do you close the door at night? Make sure its tightly closed and make sure nothing and nobody can get in. He sound pretty traumatized. Keep holding him gently and stroke him to calm him down. He may eventually calm down. Keep an eye on him and post if he gets worse. 💚

I do close the door shut tight I was surprised something was able to even open it. Hopefully he will be better tomorrow 🩵!! Thank you!

Your Welcome! Is there no way a predator could open it? If there isn't it sounds like someone opened it! You might want to put a security camera and maybe a lock if it is a person. I hope your rooster feels better! 💚

He is definitely traumatized. Does he have any wounds? I have had success with caring for a few roosters in this condition. I isolated him in his own, dark space and offered him water. A thick mucus usually came out, but eventually he was able to drink and come around. Then I slowly offered food.

But in the immediate, I would hold him comfortably and securely, sometimes for hours. I would carry him around the house while doing chores with my free hand and arm. Slowly I would introduce him to his quite space, checking on him regularly. One rooster took about a week to finally seem healthy enough (in mind and spirit) to let him decide if he wanted to join the group.

It is awful to see this when it happens, he is just doing his job. Luckily he was not killed.

Good luck

Not at all. We live in an area that as a lot of predators and it never happened before. I was so shocked when I saw the door opened yesterday. A camera was ordered right away.

I carried him in my arms all day yesterday. I then put him back in the coop. He seemed fine. He's eating and drinking good. Nobody was injured, I was lucky. I ordered a camera and put another layer of protection on my coop door. Hopefully it will never happen again. Thank you 🩵
