Hello!
My mother-in-law just gave me her two salmon favorelles; her rooster clearly had favorites, and their saddles are so worn off 😞 One has a wound under her wing - it looks ok for now, I just put some blu kote on it.

For both their saddles - is there anything I can do to promote feather growth? Will it grow back on its own? I included pictures for reference

Thank you!! 😊

Just keep the wound cleaned and apply the Blu Kote, do monitor to make sure flies aren't getting into the wound. Monitor for bad odors which will indicate infection.

Feathers that are damaged, scraggly, rubbed/worn down and broken won't be replaced until the hens go through a molt, so hopefully these girls will molt this fall. I do see some new pin feathers coming in but it's unlikely the whole bare back will be covered until molt.

Just see that they are eating well and drinking.

Flies are really bad this time of year and can cause flystrike (maggot infestation) in a matter of hours. Permethrin ready to use spray might be helpful to use on her wound along with the antibiotic ointment, and to spray the facilities. Or just keep a close eye on her. A hen saddle made out of a piece of polar fleece with 2 slits for the wings can protect their backs and the cut when it is healing. Here is a similar one I have used and it requires no sewing or straps:

I have raised some salmon faverolles hens and roosters, and I love that they usually are very sweet and mild mannered. They can become the rooster favorite or be bullied by other breeds though.
