This is our Rooster who goes by all sorts of names...mainly Rooboy or Rooster booster =)

He's 11 months old, and had perfect red combs up until about 2 months or so ago. Each morning when I let the chooks out he'd come out with fresh blood on the comb. I though He might have been trying to squeeze out somewhere, hurting himself in the process..but i never saw him do anything.

Just blood/then scabs and more blood each day. It was as big as the smooth part on the comb you see in the pictures, but it seems to be getting a bit better now. I sprayed it with iodine to help heal.. but it didnt look like it did alot.

Also these sores are in the same place either side of the comb.. my man thought maybe he had some sort of bug/mite eating at him or something? But visual inspection shows nothing.

So... it is slowly getting smaller..I'll keep treating it with the iodine... but I'm still wondering if anyone knows what this is/caused by? then I might be able to prevent it from happening again =)

Thanks in advance!! =)

His 'lovely' girls are doing this to him.
I had this same problem. Just keep it coated with Blue kote and it should heal nicely.

I agree..had the same issue with my cockerel. His "girls" actually beat the living day lights out of him...he was/is from a spring hatch and was too rough with the girls...they took care of it, and he is being MUCH nicer when doing his "thing" with them.

Once in a while, he still gets a bit too big for his britches and the girls just put him back in his place!

! Naughty girls! I'll put a cover over it first thing! Thankyou!

DO they peck him from both sides...I'm guessing while in the pen at night? Can't say I've ever seen them peck at him in the day thats for sure!

Thankyou both for the help!! =)
