Rooster doesn’t like one particular hen

A good six weeks before she went broody. All my hens are a very broody bunch and he doesn't treat them differently. It is such a shame because she is such a sweet little hen.

This exact thing is happening to me now. I have had the roo in a separate coop for a week. My concern is that any time the hen sees this rooster, she starts clucking loudly and hides in the coop. This also causes a few of the other hens chase her and try to peck her comb. I'm worried her fearful behavior is exacerbating his aggression. Do you have an update?

Following because this is super interesting. I've only observed two broodies, but one of the two was really all over the place hormonally. When she WASN'T broody she was hyper dominant with hens below her, to the point she'd mount them occasionally. I imagine some roosters would not tolerate this behavior any more than they would a cockerel making himself a nuisance.

I had this happen with my Brahma I posted about. I ended up removing him and he hangs with a bunch of goats now… it’s peaceful again. I tried to let him back in coop and run after a week and he went after her again. Mine is younger I’m going to keep him away a while and let him mature to be at least 1 and try again. He seems completely happy with goats. He can go right up to fence with the hens and hangs out with them a lot. He also has a few that jump the fence to get to him and he is perfectly fine with that. It’s a mystery to me…..

Did you ever put your rooster back in with your hens? I'm curious because I finally had to separate my rooster because he wouldn't let up with picking on my little hen. I still have no idea why he dislikes her when he used to treat her nice. Carl, my rooster doesn't like being segregated although he is still in the run with them... there is a wire fence separating them. I'm wondering now if he'll just have to stay in there forever.

So I open the gate and let them mingle again. The hen just avoids him. He chased her once that was it. When it was dusk the hens went to house and he stayed out and roosted in tree outside he has been staying in last month or so. I might put him back in coop and see what happens right now they have enough area to avoid each other.

Thanks for the update. I'll keep him in his area for a week or so and let him out and hope for the best. . Have a good night!

Well, after 10 days I let my rooster back in with the hens. They didn't even seem to miss him., btw. After a half hour or so he went after Charlotte.... the hen he was being mean to in the first place. Back in his bachelor pad area he went. I guess he'll just have to live out his days there.

I know this is an older thread but I had to chime in. I'm going through this exact thing right now with my rooster and one hen he used to get along with. She is a Cookies and Cream and looks almost identical to the OP's little hen. I've had to separate my rooster, Irvin, and I might try to reintroduce him, but it sounds like he might have to spend his days in a bachelor pad. I find this so fascinating. I'm thinking it has to do with hormones and/or broodiness. My hen is prone to broodiness, but it hasn't caused any issues in the past. Now, apparently, it is. Crazy!
