Hi.. I am trying to decide what to do with my present Orpington and pullets eggs this spring...I have 1- Buff Laced Brahma Rooster my only rooster and 4 BLB hens that are nice girls but terrible layers...since they were my first chickens and they all have names they are permanent members of the flock... along with them I have 2- Orpington adults ,and 5 pullets ... 2 -Red Sexlinks , 1- Black Star , 1- Delaware , 1- SLBR . This spring I want to hatch some more chicks, all the pullets and the Orps are great layers (egg a day) not at all like with the others, but I'm thinking if I have a rooster of a very poor breed (as far as laying) to cross with them what will the chance of the offspring having his traits being dominant be . I would like some more good layers not some more decorations for the coop. Should I just get some fertilized eggs to put under a broody this spring ,three of the BLB went broody last year I expect the same this spring , or let them hatch out their own and not over think this ???? I don't know much about rooster dominance in breeding or for that matter Brahma laying traits in general. Any advice will be appreciated.

One poor hen will give you a few chicks. A poor rooster will give you a lot more chicks. It's best to breed from the best rooster possible as he will be half your genetics over multiple hens.
