Two of my young (8-9) month old roosters had a doozy of a fight yesterday. I found the one just sitting covered in blood. I isolated him to tend to his wounds and he is a lot livelier today. He is eating and drinking. But,his one eye is not opening. I tried to gently clean the area but,I didn't want to hurt him. I ended up just putting warm cloth on that side of his face, rewarming the cloth every few minutes under the tap-which he seemed to like. (I didn't think he would appreciate ice at that point) I don't have much in the way of eye cream just some Panalog cream that I had for my old dog. I do have some antibiotic powder for poultry. I have given him some of this water soluble vitamin & antibiotic powder. Is there any 'human' cream that is safe to use? I read that it is not safe to use anything with "Caine" on the end of the word i.e..lidocaine etc. Does anyone know why? Anyhow,I am worried his eye will become infected. If I just leave it alone will it heal on its own? Any help is much appreciated.

First of all, welcome to BYC! Second, I use a chicken eye dropper that I get from TSC, open the eye as much as possible, and squirt some in there. After a few days of doing this I usually see a huge improvement and they are better in about a week to two weeks.

This is my hen Sandy who had an eye issue that I cleared up with the ointment in about a week.

Thanks for the welcome! and for ur quick response-what kind of ointment? and could I use an old syringe (without the needle, of course)?
