Rooster following me

I have a big Red Ranger Broiler rooster who's my husband's baby. This rooster knows both me and my husband and we raised him from a tiny little chick. This rooster let's us pet him and is protective of us. He even has two favorite hens. Those hens love being around us and one of the hens likes to jump only on my shoulders.
However, I have mixed feelings about the rooster following me around. My husband is at work, I'm home feeling kind of sick but I still need to care for the chickens. I go out in the yard, give them a morning treat. Then an hour later, go back out to give them their first meal of scratch and feed, along with more water as it's very hot.
I always talk to the chickens and the rooster and the hens know my voice and are the first ones to come running to get food.
While throwing food out in different spots, rooster and the hens follow me around.
But when I went out there to collect eggs without food. The rooster is constantly following. At one point I'm standing still watching the other roos, and this rooster is standing in front of me like a guard dog blocking other chickens from getting close to me. He walks off but stays close. Every time I go near another chicken he is right beside me making sure the other chickens don't get close as he will peck them if they do. I keep talking to him. But I dont know why I feel uneasy when he follows me. Any reason why he does this?

Has he ever shown you the slightest bit of aggression when you’re around the hens? If he hasn’t, he may be claiming you as part of HIS flock. Following you would be akin to him following one of his hens that has gone off on her own from the flock. It sounds as if he may be watching over you as well. If he saw you as a threat to him and his flock, I think he would’ve tried to charge at you or flog you by now. This is ONLY my personal opinion drawn from my OWN experience with my flocks. 🙂 I’ve had a few roosters show similar behavior with me. But, regardless of his docile behavior around you, always be aware anyhow.

Sounds like he's spoiled and expecting treats everytime you come around.

How old are these birds, in weeks or months?
How many males?

spoiled and expecting treats everytime you come around.
My thoughts exactly.

Then an hour later, go back out to give them their first meal of scratch and feed,
They should have a good chicken ration available at all times.
Treats maybe once or twice a week.
