We have a rooster who we've been growing out, and recently--about 2-3 weeks ago--a lump appeared on his neck. The lump is firm but not hard, and we cut it open to look at it and the inside was meaty with what looked like white strings. The surface layer of the lump also has a yellowish color, like you see when something is infected. He can eat and drink fine but spends most of the time resting, and his balance is off. We have no idea if it's a tumor, abscess/cyst, or what. Any help in identifying what it may be and how to treat it will be much appreciated!

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
Crested Cream Legbar, ~1+ months, no idea on the approximate amount but he feels very light compared to others his age.

2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Rests a lot, is unbalanced, and cannot keep his left eye open (the lump is on the left side of his neck), eats and drinks fine.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
Almost 2 weeks?

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
No.

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
No.

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
No current idea.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
Before we brought him into the house, he drank water with a bit of ACV and some herbs mixed in. His food would be chick crumbles with cracked corn and the same herbs as the water. After we brought him inside he's been drinking water with garlic, herbs, and oil of oregano in it. I'm unsure what is mixed in his food.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
For the most part, it looks normal, and very rarely has looked runny.

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
Giving him vitamins, and cutting open the lump to see what the inside looked like.

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
We are planning to treat him ourselves.

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
Before we brought him inside, he was in a chicken run+house set-up with a lot of other baby birds of various ages. The chicken house has pine shavings inside. He has been the only chicken we've had in our 4 years that has had this issue

I don’t have any experience with growths like that in my chickens, but it could be an ingrown feather cyst or a tumor from a virus, such as Mareks or leukosis. Those usually strike birds a little older though. The white stringy material is interesting. I would look for other lumps on him as he grows.

I was thinking it might be an ingrown feather cyst but I'm unsure. We really want to try and remedy the lump as soon as we can because, ever since it formed he has been sluggish. We miss all the energy he used to have.

I just lost my silver Laced Wyandotte that had that exact same lump. I immediately took her to the vet and the vet wasn't hopeful. She took a biopsy and confirmed cancerous cells. The decision was made to euthanize her. She did an autopsy and sent tissue samples out. The tumor came back as being consistent with Mareks. This is a bird that I paid to be given the Mareks vaccination at birth. Unfortunately it doesnt always work. Now I worry about the rest of my herd.
