Our school hatched eggs last year and we brought home 33 chicks. We were pretty lucky that it looks like only 10 Roos. We have been having fun trying to identify the breeds, but are not sure about some. I will post pics and what we think they are, but would love to have the expert opinions here.

Ok, the top not sure Barred Rock or Dom. Second, I am thinking black leghorn due to ears, but legs are dark so I am not real sure about that. Third again barred or dom? Third buff leghorn and the last we are flummoxed. No clue. What do you guys think?

Where did the eggs come from? Are we looking at pure bred birds, or are mixes a possibility?

The first bird looks like a barred Rock. Dominiques have rose combs and Marans have white/pink legs.
Second bird looks a little heavy for a Leghorn, but maybe the blacks are heavier. Maybe a Mincora? They're a little heavier than Leghorns and Andalusians, and I don't know of a hatchery that carries blacks right off.
Third bird is a mix, he'd be a black sex link if from a hatchery.
Fourth bird looks like a buff Mincora. Again, too heavy for a Leghorn, and I don't know of any hatchery that carries them.
Fifth bird looks like a Dark Cornish.

Barred Plymouth Rock
Black Minorca
Black Sexlink
Buff Minorca
Dark Cornish

Leghorns (if correct) usually have yellow legs.

Thanks for all the replies. I should have said that all the eggs came from ideal and that all the buff colored ones came out of small white eggs.

Oooh, Wyandottes7, you are usually spot-on, but that's no Buff Orpington!

You're right.

For some reason, I thought that Minorcas had slate legs, so thought that it was a Buff Orpington because of the white legs. I just went and looked it up, and found that they have white legs. I now think that it is a Buff Minorca, especially since it came from white eggs.

I don't know why I didn't notice the white earlobes, either..

I guess everyone can make mistakes!
