Rooster missing tail feathers

I just returned home from a week long vacation to find my rooster missing his tail feathers. They normally free range but were kept in the run while we were on holidays.
It is mid August, has been more like fall weather. Could this be molting? Stress?
He didn't molt last year and is about 1.5 years old.

He’s almost definitely molting. My Marans rooster just lost both of his sickle feathers and suddenly started looking busted as heck this week, poor boy. The run is full of his feathers. Some just molt earlier than the others, probably has something to do with day length getting shorter and night time temperatures dropping be sure to give your boy some extra protein snacks!

My boy Roger is going through a molt too, he looks just like yours lol. I thought he was losing weight at first, but then I noticed how many feathers he was missing and they're all over the place outside and in the coop! Definitely a molt.
