I will be getting my first chicks next week. I have ordered 12 hens and one rooster. Was the rooster a good idea to maintain order or will he be more trouble than he is worth? I have done a lot of reading and opinions seem to vary.

You might get more responses if you move this to a different catagory.

I can't imagine not having a rooster. I like to hear them, plus they're usually very pretty. There are mean ones once in a while, but I haven't had one in a long time. Plus I like to incubate eggs and hatch my own chicks which wouldn't be possible without them.

I didn't want a rooster at first. I ended up with 8 of them out of 12 straight-run chicks. I gave them all away except for one! He is such a good boy, I didn't have the heart to get rid of him.

Just think of it this way, the roosters job is to protect the hens, which counts for a lot I think. Just make sure you spend extra time with him and he should grow up to respect you. I carry mine around every day for awhile and he really is a good boy! If the roo gets to be a problem and unruly, you can always get rid of him later. Right now, don't worry about it!
