Just when I think I have my roosters figured out, they come up with a new way to be problems. A week ago I moved my main flock rooster into retirement with two young roosters, and left a third young rooster in with the flock. I have been focusing all my attention on that group dynamic. Well, that's going super well, but my other two pens, each a small breeding group with it's own rooster, groups that have been stable and peaceful for months... tonight I found one of those guys had flown out of his area to pick a fight with the other. Thankfully he landed out in the field and it was just a fence fight, but there was a whole heck of a lot of blood. I ended up catching the one in a bird net and scooping him back into his own yard. Geesh. Meanwhile the retiring rooster is settling a bit. The first three nights he managed to fly out of his new area to try and get back to his old coop and hens. That third night he landed in with the Cream Legbar guy who was the fighter tonight. After that I started going out late afternoon and scooting the bachelors into their small closed run before bed. If you had asked me if ANY of these guys were able to fly well enough to hop that fence I would have said no. I guess staying in the pen is a habit and choice?
