I have a rooster with black spots on his comb. He does not look sick. The black spots look like little black dots like a line but not infected. He does not have any pus coming from anywhere. He is in a pen with 3 hens. I am feeding them layer crumble feed and layer pellets. Can anyone help me figure out what this is? I have looked on the internet for the fowl pox but it does not look like that.

I too have my roo with some black spots on his comb. He got frostbite on his comb last winter and it looked just like this. He is all involved with one of his girls brooding and he is having a time keeping up with the other 2 girls. I didn't know if this was a "soon to be a daddy thing". Thanks for any info, Leslie

Thanks. I have looked at many different sites for fowl pox but it does not really look like that. It almost looks like bugs on his comb but it is not. I have only had him 1 week. He rules his pen of 3 hens and gets mad when my husband goes into the pen. Is it possible the hens will peck at him at night. I have a pen next to his that has another rooster and we have blocked their vision to each other because they were trying to fight through the fencing.

It could be bug bites, or he is pecked at. The comb is highly vascular, and the black spots are scabs. If it's from mosquitoes, just keep an eye on him for a secondary infection.

Thanks for the advise. I think it may be bug bites or he may be scratching his comb against the fence at night because he has his hens in a corner with him at night -- any suggestions on getting them to sleep in the hen house area. i have 2 pens one set sleeps on top of the house the others sleep in a corner of the pen with no cover at all.

I read somewhere that mites can cause that.

try and wash the spots off..could be peck marks or wire scrapes.
could also be mites.
check for mites..
if mites are found treat all the birds..
you can apply poultry dust or Sevin to the birds..and use a Q-tip to apply it at the base of the comb.
apply a light coat of neosporin (without pain killer)or diluted betadine.

keep an eye for any spreading or other symptoms.

get rid of any standing water, or anything that can hold water to attract mosquitoes, which will spread Pox.
