My 4 year old Brahma has always been a bit of an odd roosting bird. he only rooste on the roosting bars about 3 days. He has always prefered the 5/4 board that keeps the litter from falling out the big door at the end of the coop. Usually by himself. I recently built a temporary coop so i can demolish and rebuild a bigger better coop. All the girls went right back to their normal positions on the roost bars, but Rodger has decided to sleep on the ground. I even moved his favorite 5/4 board over for him. Anybody have any knowledge about what's up with him?

High high are the bars? Brahmas are heavy birds and can have trouble getting to the higher roosts. Have you checked the bottom of his feet for injuries or infection?
His bar, his prefered bar is maybe 18 to 20 inches off the ground. I don't remember exactly right now. All my birds are Brahma, Orpington or B&O mix so all pretty good sized birds and none seem to have any problems. In fact i was out late one evening and in the low light did not notice two girls missing when i locked up the coop. In the morning i found them on top of the coop just over 8 feet off the ground, so i think your check the feet suggestion is more aprapo. I will check him tomorrow.

What are budgies, by the way?
Budgerigars "budgies" are a type of very small parrot. They are more commonly known as parakeets.

Budgie (Tsunami).

How long has it been since they moved coops? Have you tried manually putting him to be on his board?

Does he have room to spread his wings and fly up at an angle of no more than 45-degrees?

Since roosters are so much larger they need more space to maneuver even when not too heavy to fly.

Also, if it's fall where you are (putting your general location into your profile helps people give better targeted advice), he may be molting and unable to fly at the moment.

he slept on his roost the first two or three nights. i am beginning to think he does not like the girls cuddling up close to him. They rarely slept in the doorway with him and never more than one at a time. Now he is usually surrounded on his roost by three or four hens.
