I "had" a trio of millie flure D'uccles, and last night something ate my roosters head off!, I had them in a temporary pen with 2x2 wire. Their bad about not roosting and lay in the corner. Something ate his head off through the fence and tried to pull him out by the leg (I'm assuming since his leg was through the wire). What might this little night bandit Be??

we've had one other done this way about a month ago, but we have 4 australian shepherds that run the yard we figured they were slackin on their job since we've never had any other problems except for down at our barn (where they can't get to) something was getting in (digging) and one a night we'd find a half eat chicken in the rafters?

Raccoon. Sorry about your roo.

A racoon is probable but an Owl will do the same thing. He'll bite the head off and since he can't pull the body through the wire, he leaves it. I've seen it occur early in the morning as the bird stretches out against the wire to catch the morning sun and the owl hits it.

What size wire do you have? It has to be very small for a raccoon NOT to be able to get his hand (front paw) in and grab a chicken...sometimes the chicken will stick his head out looking for goodies or when they are scared they will run along the fence line and stick their heads thru --trying to get away----it's easy for them to be caught...

Beef up you cage with 1/2" hardware cloth to prevent this from happening ..Sorry for your loss...

RACOON!! and 2 X 2 wire is way too large. I have had racoons reach in 1 X 1 and rip the heads and wings off of my chickens. Now use hardware cloth around the bottoms of my runs.

Sorry for your loss.

A Raccoon did the same to a crippled rooster I had in a ICU dog crate. It managed to pull out the feet and head and ate them off. It was hideous. We had problems with raccoons getting into a very secure coop after our dog died. We promptly bought another dog and have not had a problem since!!

My Millies dont roost either, I often wonder if their feet are not able to grasp anthing round or flat. very weird little chiclkens.
But I love them.
