So, after learning how to tell if eggs are fertilized by looking for the bullseye (Thanks BYC!!!), I was making some pumpkin bread when I realized that my own blue Cochin rooster, Chubby-Daddy, isn't getting the job done out in the chickenyard! It's just scandalous! You'd think he was king of the love-grotto with all the strutting he does, but alas, it was all a ruse...So here's the deal: he's a big standard guy, nearly 2 years old, weighs @ least 10 lbs., prolly more like 12, & seems to prefer 1 particular hen over any others, but I've seen him chase 1 other one a couple of times. He seems to go only for the "bleach blonde" look...never has looked twice @ our black or red girls...The hens are all approx. 6 lbs & not a whole lot of plumage like a cochin has. Someone once told me that the Cochins could be hard to breed because" all those feathers get in the way"...but that doesn't sound right. Is he just way too big for them? We used to have a tiny white bantan Cochin that prolly weighed 2 lb. that was his best girl, & seeing them together was a pretty funny sight, actually. Any thoughts on what could be going on here? I'm just wondering....

Not really sure. Everyone says that the ratio you have is a good one between roosters vs. hens. 2 years doesnt seem too old.

lol maybe he is in love. Aww...

His feathers are probably getting the in way. If you really want chicks, try trimming the feathers around his vent.

how many girls you got? Is it possible that the girl he likes you have not gotten any eggs from to check for a bulleye on those? If he is not liking the other colored girls then obviously, you are not going to see the bullseye. A rooster favoring a particular girl is not uncommon, I have actualy had a Dutch rooster at one time that would not even LOOK at the Dutch girls in the pen, all he liked was the fat bottomed cochin girls! Yes, the large fowl cochins are not as feathered as the bantams, the info on being hard to breed was about bantams, those are almost always trimmed or AI'd.

Thanks guys. I actually did check the off-white eggs of his favorite, but they don't show the ring either. She's the only one that lays that color. The other "blonde" lays blue eggs that I can't distinguish from the red girl's. Hmmm... I guess maybe it really is the feathers then. He's a super fluffy-butt! I guess if I decide to take my addiction to a Whole 'Nother Level with an incubator, then I'll give him a trim. I'm really trying not to go there yet. It's hard after seeing the oh-so-affordable Styrofoam cooler incubator diagram though. Sigh. *whispers to self, " Be strong!"*

i would try trimming his feathers and sorry that he is favoring some of the hens and not looking at the others

i have one of those but at least he pays attension to the others.

I know my roo does. He has one hen he likes the best. Her eggs are always bullseyed. The other RSL hen I have is kinda dumb. Her head is obviously too small for her body, she is long-necked and narrow bodied, but ironically my better layer, and very friendly. And she has the most beautiful GREEN eyes. although theres maybe only a weeks worth of eggs fertile coming from her out of 2-3 months, I think my roo knows deep down she just isnt quality biology. He likes the plain-jane fatty hen.

Trim his vent feathers. He has to get vent to vent for breeding succesfully so too many feathers around the vent really can make a difference.
