Well depends on their age right? Mine is 20 weeks old and he's been only really crowing for a month! Ohhh man it's annoying sometimes! But he's a handsome one!

If you want to know if you have hens or roosters, post pics in the "What breed or gender" section. Take a clear profile shot of each bird, including legs, and be sure to post the age of the bird. 16 weeks should be pretty obvious, but some breeds are slower to mature, or an older dominant rooster can inhibit young guys from crowing.

Just checked

SO if mine are 16 weeks old they could still be boys?

[/quote Just checked with my hubby and he's been defiantly crowing for 8 weeks! So about 2 months! Sorry! I think by now you'd know!!

Quote: When you say 'be boys' are you referring to fertility and mating or crowing?

Some cockerels are fertile at that age, and some hens are laying at that age. Once upon a time commercial roosters were 'de crowed' at a very young age by having a white hot wire pushed down their throat. Those that didn't die, didn't crow, in fact they were probably hard put to breathe, never mind make noise.

If you want babies but no crowing rooster, you could try agisting/boarding your hens out to someone who has a rooster, then bringing them back a month later, 'pregnant'. It's often done for those in suburbia by those in rural areas. Never know until you ask. ;)

I have heard one rooster who didn't crow in any way that could get him in trouble, it was a soft noise. Sounded like 'erk-ee-erk' lol... And one of my boys never crowed in his life until three times in one day while the other boys were caged and he was alone with some hens all to himself. Three soft crows in one day and never before, and never after. Someone has a non crowing roo, I'm sure, but the probable deformity required to silence them may not be wise to breed on with. Crowing is a good sign of health and strength of lungs, etc, it's not for nothing that they make that noise. Anyway, best wishes. Bubs are possible minus a rooster. In fact you could probably get frozen or chilled semen to use on them if you were that way minded...

Mine is 18 weeks. he crows at least 5-6 times a day. He grows early morning. Then at 7:30 when our first RSL lays an egg then at 10 whne our second RSL lays her egg. They are the only two laying at the moment. Then he will crow when boyfriend comes home from work.He is the friendlist rooster I have seen.
