how much in diameter is your roosting perch? Thanks!

At least the size of an adult's wrist.

The easiest way to make a roost, though, is to use two by fours, with the flat side up. The chickens will be able to sit on their feet and keep 'em warm in cold weather. Chickens are ground dwelling birds and don't grip the perch like smaller, flying birds.

You might want to rethink the bamboo. It's slippery, and a that's not the most comfortable kind of surface for a bird like a chicken to roost on. Added to that, a completely round surface like a bamboo bole isn't the best shape for a chicken's foot. A wider, flatter surface is better.

When I use natural branches, I try to pick ones that are a bit wider than the bottom of our chickens' feet, and I also try to pick some with bark that's smooth but not slippery.

We just went in our backyard and got a couple branches. I think they are probably a couple inches in diameter. No need to spend money.
