Roosting Questions

I built a roosting "branch for my chickens. I have 2 questions
-Does the roosting branch need to be round or is a piece of wood in the shape of a rectangle 1 inch X 1/2 inch ok
-How high should the roosting branch be off the ground?

The roost does not have to be round. I have some that prefer "flat".
As to height, can you ever really get it high enough?

I placed my (main) roost 4 feet from the floor, 4 of my chickens roost there, the other 3 go the additional 4 feet to the rafters.
Whatever makes them happy!
