What materials can we use for roosts? Would a 2 by 4 work or a large dow rod?How far off the ground should they be? Our chickens just spent their first night outside in the coop with a light but we they all just huddled together. thanks

I like to use a 2 x 4 with the wider side up. That way, they can cover their feet in the winter. They don't perch so much as they sit.

Height just depends on the surroundings, but the roost should be higher than the nest boxes, otherwise they'll sleep in the boxes and keep them soiled.

I have alot of chickens so it's: about 10 ft. tall and about 8 ft. wide.

I believe the general rule is a 2x4 works better than a round dowel or branch, although some seem to think the branch works fine, as long as it is large enough in diameter. I've been told that chickens don't grip with their toes, but like to have their feet flat. Our perch is a 2x4, 4" side flat, with "corners" slightly rounded w/sandpaper to prevent splinters!

We have the droppings board at about 32 inches, and the first roost about 10 inches above that. The next roost is 12 inches higher and 12" closer to the wall (but againk, 12" away from the wall) Out of 13 birds most will use the top roost, sometimes all of them. Other times 2-3 will use the lower roost. Guess it just depends if they get a spot next to their buddy or not:) Just remember to have your nest boxes lower than the lowest roost.
