Hi all. My hen hatched her egg on Monday. Since then, they have been separated in a different area not able to join the rest of the flock. I figured this was the safest for the first few days. Now I’m wondering if I should allow them to go outside and wander around? She doesn’t seem to have any interest, but I want them to assimilate to flock life ASAP. Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.

Have they at least been able to see her and her chick? At first, I kept my broody and her chicks in their own brooder in the coop, so everyone could still each other, for a week before letting everyone out. Though, the second time I just kept my broody and her chicks within the flock. If the broody is any good, she’ll keep her chicks safe from the others. It also helps when the other chickens are used to chicks.

Yup. I kept her and the chick where all the other chickens could see them. I thought this would help. I’ll keep her in until Monday. A week sounds like a good amount of time. Thank you!

That’s good, it make re-integration much easier for both mom & baby. And if this is a first time for everyone involved, a week of see-but-don’t-touch is the best bet, I agree. At that point, the chick(s) are able to move around/run much better if there is a need to run away for whatever reason.
