Hi Ya'll ,
So I ordered some new chicks , 6 total ( pullets , supposedly ) and at 5-6 weeks this ones looking like a Roo !?!? Though the featers look more like a pullet. I already have 3 rooster. What do you think? I'll try and get more pictures.

Hope this pic helps.

That's a cockerel for sure. notice how his comb and wattles are bigger than the others. He also has the male feathers coming in which is why he appears shinier than the others. The feathers and wattles/combs are key indicators for telling the gender of your bird.

I ordered from ideal poultry and they arrived healthy and with no issues. 3 RIR and 3 Barred Rocks pullets but in this case it may be 1 rooster and 5 hens. A time before that we picked up 6 from TSC and 4 turned out to be roosters.talk about bad luck! one of the roosters and one my Cornish hen had fallen prey, one of my Leghorn roosters doesn't crow at all and is very wimpy . the other Leghorn is a true Beta but wants to be an Alpha but my RIR rooster ( beautiful bird) is most dominate. I've been wiping him into shape. Only thing I got out of the TSC pick was a RIR that is now laying . So we bought 6 from Ideal Poultry.

Thanks for the detail. I know the hatcheries do their level best to get the gender right but it can be so disappointing when a much-beloved chick turns out to have been mis-identified. Maybe someday there will be a foolproof way to identify the gender of a fertilized egg. (Hey, I can dream, can't I?)

TSC is notorious for selling straight run chicks as sexed pullets.

Cockeral for sure. He has a large comb and wattles. Also starting the cockerel feathering.

I'd order from Ideal again or even try the hatchery down the road from me. I'm a little weary about having 4 roosters and 6 hens. Sounds chaotic. I'd like to keep the 3 that I have and the 6 hens , down the road acquire more hens. My coop is big enough. Thoughts?
