Rotten egg

Went to cook an egg that I had just gathered and when I cracked it open it had a horrible smell. Holding my breath I looked at the inside of shell it had dark brown spots. I gather eggs daily so I know it was layed that day. What do you think? Has this happened to anyone else?

Ewww, I have heard of eggs out side of the nest box that may have been there for a while turning rotten, but I have not read anything like your story until now.

Could it have been under the bedding material in the nest for awhile? I've had hens hide them under the hay in the nest box before.
