She's up to 5 kills. I know she's just protecting her chicks but I hate her anyway. I have two mom's and a total of 5 hatchlings under 2 weeks old have made it into the other coop. One got through a gap of about an inch and a half that I fixed. Now yesturday 4 went UNDER the door. I am horrified! One of the chicks I was going to keep as my own. My hen pecked them to death. I have a threshold for the door and for some reason they got curious and went UNDER that to get through! I am wondering if maybe a chipmunk made the "tunnel" for them or if mom did while scratching away. Either way...they're gone. I keep adding safeguards and they act like suicide experts. I tried to make the other hen mom to all and kick out the agressive one but that didn't go well. The other mom did one peck at a baby and it was "ABORT MISSION"!
So when can I trust the hen to stop being so overprotective? These chicks were hatched between the 15th and 23rd. How long will they need mom to keep them warm outside? Thank you!

Hi, I'm no expert but I would take the chicks inside and put them under a light until they get older. I say better safe then sorry. You can't really blame the chicken....it is their nature.

My friend, who's raised chickens for 36 years, always hatches under a brood hen. Then puts the hatchlings in a brooder for safe keeping..............................I owe him all the thanks in the world for the 3 dozen eggs that got me started again. Thanks,Jerry
