I got a Rouen duck about 3 wks. ago. The guy we got it from said it is a female but was molting so not laying eggs. Well, I think it is a drake. I am new to ducks so bear with me. It has not laid one egg, could it be still molting? How long does a molt typically last? My chickens have not molted yet, so I don't know what to expect. I went out and it's wing feathers look scraggly and there was a lot in the pool. Itlso acts like it has gape. Can ducks get gape worm. It itches its head alot, but I've seen no mites. Can I use Ivermecton Pour On for the duck like I do my chickens? Could he/she be pulling them out. It eats flock raiser, no oyster shell as I don't know if it's a drake. The man we got them from has had ducks for 15 yrs. on a pond where he says wild mallards have come and gone as well. So I don't know what it could have been exposed too. THe duck seems to have a low quack but also seems to hiss. So I am really confused. Some of my sentences got messed up, not sure. I tried to write it acts like it has gape too.

what does it sound like?

Female

Male

How bad is the itching? My ducks like to scratch their heads once in awhile but its not a constant thing.

Thanks for the links. I haven't listened yet, but will soon. The itching isn't constant. Do you know if ducks can get gape worm? If so how do you treat?

Well, watched the videos and now I know why I don't have eggs.

I dont think ducks need to be wormed. Their pretty hardy. As for the feathers he very well could be molting. I know my ducks molting takes quite awhile.

Whew. I feel better now. I think he is still molting then. He doesn't particularly act sick. He eats well, is fiesty and isn't to afraid of me but still on the leary side. So I guess all of this is pretty normal for a duck. Guess I can quit making sure he is getting oyster shell. Darn it, I like him, but I wanted eggs too. Thanks again Kevin, you have been helpful.
