Hello! We have a drake and a hen ( Duke & Daisy) 6 months old. Daisy started laying sporadically a few months ago but would always abandon her "spot". A few weeks ago she finally made a beautiful nest and laid 16 eggs. Now Two-threeish weeks in we candled the eggs and they clearly are not fertilized. No big deal to us but it kills me to see her sitting on that nest all day knowing they will not hatch. Do I take them from her or do I let nature takes it's course? Will her biological clock tell her to stop after so many days and abandon them? Or will she fret if I take them this far in? I know I'm putting WAY to much human emotion into this lol. New to ducks, used to chickens. Not quite understanding the duck laying habit. I'm used to the egg a day from the chickens and obvious broodiness. Advice?

I am constantly taking eggs out from under my Muscovy's who will brood at the drop of a hat. They usually get over it pretty quick even those that don't it may take a day or 2. I even had a chicken sit on her nest 21 days before getting off and she sat on nothing. I go by behavior if they are coming out daily eating and drinking and bathing I sometimes let it run it's course if they aren't the eggs get taken away. Main thing you have to be concerned about is their health and if the eggs rot in the nest.
