Hey y’all! We have two rouens and a silver appleyard female. Not sure what the rouens are… one refuses to speak!!

Anyways, if we happen to have a drake, I was curious if any of y’all have mixed the two breeds, and what some possible color variations might be! Have a blessed day!

I have a picture of this exact thing, but it’s on a device that I don’t have at the moment!! I’ll try to get it when I can.

They will have the “restricted mallard” coloration. They’ll have the dark cap and tail like an Appleyard duckling, along with some extra dark markings.

I’ve read that, as adults, they’ll be fairly Rouen-like, but they may have some white markings on their wings.

Oh yay! Yes please!!

Sooo, does that mean the Rouen coloring is more dominant? Like “rouen featuring appleyard charm?”
😂

I’m not good at this genetics thing

Sort of, yes.

The Li+ gene from the Rouen is dominant, giving the babies a darker feather coloration overall.

The M^R gene from the Appleyard is dominant, making the babies restricted, but I’ve read restricted on its own is most noticeable in ducklings, not so much as adults.

So, they’ll look like an in between as babies, but they’ll lean more Rouen-like as they grow and feather out.

Hey, I have that photo! @DuckDuckPromise This is a restricted baby (background is chocolate restricted).

I don’t have a “for-certain” photo of them grown up, but my guess is it’d be something like this girl. Just a dash of white.

Oh my goodness!! Thank you so much for sharing!! They are gorgeous babies, I’d be okay with them for sure!! (Not many ducks I’m not okay with, but that is besides the point!)

While you’re here, would you care to take a gander at two rouens genders?

I feel like one is a big and one is a girl, but there are a few things throwing me off!!

One has the raspy voice, and a drake feather.
The other….. it refuses to make noises, EVEN if I pick her (it?) up!!
The second one does not have a drake feather though… they are about 10 1/2 weeks old!

I’m really thinking it is a girl. But her head is turning green!! So confused!!

If you could post another photo of the sides of their heads, that would be great :)

It’s possible they’re both male.. Their backs look very similar. And boys often talk less. Drake feathers can also take a while to come in - my boys got theirs at ~13 weeks.

Ahhh, I had a few other pictures in there, but evidentially they didn’t post! That’s my bad, I’m sorry!! And the two that did post are definitely not good pictures to judge by 🙄😂
Let me try again!! And if these aren’t helpful either, I’ll try for better ones tomorrow, Lord’s Willing! Thank you already for all of the help!

Also, there’s a yellow billed one and a pinkish billed one. The yellow bill has the prominent drake feather, and pink bill has the more green head, but I’m not sure if you can really see the green sheen in these pictures! I can only see it a little in the one of *her* on the ground!

I’m holding out hope!!

These photos confirm with me that they’re both boys, sorry.

The solid, light-grey bill is a male trait. And you can see his green head is coming in near the base of his bill. Females won’t have this dark line.
