Hi everyone! I am a regular lurker here and have read many threads. This time I am unable to locate exactly what I need, so I thought that maybe you all could tell me what you think.
I have a RR Hen that had fly strike below her vent the first of July. After doing the dirty dead of bathing, soaking and picking maggots out, I flushed the channels with dilute Betadine every day for over a week and applied Silver Sulfadiazine cream. I had also started her on Pen with Procaine 300,000 units per ml. At 0.25 cc in the breast IM daily x 7 days. She did very well and wound healed excellent. I also have wormed everyone to be sure that the dirty bottom wasn't caused by worms.
She did well for about 2 weeks, then started acting puny again. Laying in odd places and not socializing. I brought her back in and the puffy abdominal area was again bright red. (I had previously clipped feathers away.) Thinking that she probably need another round of ATB for residual cellulitis, I restarted the Pen G for another 7 days. Again she did very well but the redness never totally went away.
Now here we are a little over 2 weeks later and she is a bit under the weather again, and puffy abdomen area is bright red. She is still eating, pooping, roosting ect. But when let out she goes and lays on her side in the sun and has slowed down on her eating. So I do think that there is still active infection.
My question is, what antibiotic would you use next? And at what dose? For how long? My research has turned up very few options for a cellulitis type infection.
(I did think of the possibly of fungal at this point, but I see no evidence of that.)
Thank you so much for taking the time to read all of this! Hoping you have some suggestions.
