About 2 months ago, I made two nest boxes out of 18 gallon rubbermaid totes. I put a hole in the wide side and stuffed it with straw. It has been working great. The straw stays dry, the eggs stay clean and the hens love it. Yesterday afternoon, I went out to collect eggs and found one of the totes flipped over on its side with the hole facing down. I went to right it and it was heavier than it should have been. I popped the lid off to find a dead hen inside. She apparently got trapped in there earlier in the day and the box was in the sun all morning. The day was only in the mid 70's but it was enough to kill her. To prevent this from happening again, I put paving stones in the bottom of the tote. If I make more in the future, I will be putting the access hole in the narrow side of the tote as it is unlikely to tip over in that direction to trap a bird.

I used plastic dish pans as liners in my nest boxes. I had to screw them in place with a single screw and fender washer b/c when the girls stepped on the rim, the pans would wobble. Took them out for a deep cleaning early this summer, and never got them put back. It seems that the girls all prefer the boxes w/o the dish pans! (I had put one back, and they now avoid that box.

I'm so sorry about your chickie... :-( I don't have enough room in my coop for my nest boxes (I have one in there, but that's it), so under the coop I have three covered cat boxes. So far, I only have one layer, but we'll see how they work.

So sorry for your loss. That was a helpful 'heads up' for other members, thank you for that.

Agghh! Terrible! So Sorry for your horror.
Have heard of this happening with pans, tubs, buckets...
....but you'd think that tote would be big enough to prevent a tip over.
The pavers are a great idea.
