I was wondering, if my chickens are allowed to free range on about 1 1/2 acres, almost everyday, is it necessary to follow the square footage rule of 4sq ft in the coop, 10sq ft out of the coop? My coop will be apx 32 square feet, (just started building it,getting more chicks next week!
) but it is in a 10'x 40' run that is entirely enclosed. Since the run is fully enclosed, top, bottom sides, I leave the coop door open and they can come out whenever they want. I currently have two standard hens, two bantam hens and a sikie mix rooster. I plan on adding 4 more standard hens in a few months. I know they will have plenty of outdoor space, even if confined to the run. However, my coop will only have 32 sq ft, like I said. According to the rule, I should only have 8 chickens. Also, I had read that each chicken should have apx 10'' of roost space. I will have about 12' of roost space in the new coop, enough for about 14 birds. They will have wall mounted feeders, and hanging waters, so that won't take up floor space. I have taken into account nest box space. With the nest boxes, the coop would have 40sq ft.
Thanks for any advice!!
