I have a large run for my hens and ducks, but as usual they have destroyed all the grass and pounded the soil down. Even with tons of straw in there over the winter it was really barren. Today I went around with my pitchfork and tuned about 30% of the dirt in big clumps.

The girls went nuts hunting the abundant worms and it broke up the hard soil crust so they can scratch again. I'll see how long it takes them to scratch it all semi flat again then go through with the pitchfork and dig up some more of it for them.

It should help with the odor and give the ladies more to do during the day when they can't free range.

I did this a few weeks ago and had a similar experience. Our run is so soggy right now due to all the recent rains!

Mine is sloped so it mostly drains though the birds like making holes that fill up with water. I hope to find time soon to dump 6 or 7 wheelbarrow loads of sand out there.
