Hello all! I'm new, and just finishing up building a coop and run. I cemented 4x4s into the ground, but in the process bits of small cement pieces (pea sized to golf ball sized) were strewn in the run area. Also, potting soil was accidentally tossed in the run, which contained perlite. I've picked up and raked as best I can, but I'm still finding little pieces every day. I planned on putting my 5 week old chicks out in a few days and I'm worried about them eating the construction leftovers. Has anyone experienced this before? Should I be worried?

Worried… yes we should all be worried for the welfare of our birds, but I think you will be just fine. Can you till the soil or otherwise turn it over, with perhaps a shovel? That should take care of the issue at hand. Use a spring rake and sweep the run, and or turn the soil over and I think you should be good to go. Birds are a lot smarter than we give them credit for.

So for your benefit do the above and then don't be such a worry wort, the birds will guide you through it. They are smart like that.

Best to you and the problem at hand.
