Hello,

Just finishing my plans then going to start to build, soo egg-cited. But was wondering how high should I build the coop and run? The coop will probably be around 4 ft but I'm planning on attatching a run to a giant rabbit hutch I got yesterday for £5 in a garden centre! It's only around 2/2.5ft in height. So that'd be the overall height of the run.

I'm getting 2/3 Silkie bantams so not big birds. I've read they are flightless, so why do they need height? Do they jump? hop?

Sorry for the daft questions, I'm a complete beginner.

Also, whilst I'm here.. Will I need a nest box in the rabbit hutch/run? They will have a propper coop that they will spend the majority of the time in, but will be in the run when the weathers okay for part of the day.

Thankyou.

I think that height should be fine. I built mine at just over 6' high because I wanted to easily get in there to play with the girls as well as be able to clean inside the run. My run is 16 x 8 and it was just going to be much easier if I could get in there. It also allowed me to do other things in there like build an outdoor roost with chicken ladder for them to use during the day.
Keep us posted.

I think the height issue is more for you than for your chickens. The higher it is (up to your height) the easier it is to get in there and clean and feed and water, etc.
