run floor..

My coop is done.. i have to construct the run now.. the floor right now is dirt.. i plan on putting hay down.. what else do you guys recommend to put down? the run is going to be 20' long by 8' wide.. im going to have about 16 chickens in there

Hi Congrats on the coop! I just got my new coops sides on today. Still lots to do. As for Hay; I have horses and hay on top of dirt breaks down with weather and is a pain to remove. The ground just under stays moist/wet so long after every where dries out. I am going to get wood chips for free from a landscape co that needs a place to drop a loads. Yes it will break down over time but it turns into top soil not a mess. I also may miss it with course sand.
