in regards to the ground where the coop and run will be located, has been barren for years. i started to rake the pine straw, leaves, dead tree parts and other items out of the area. i really had to get down deep with the pitch fork because it was so deep. so, that being said, i know the hens will have a wonderful time scratching through all of the layers to get the bugs. but how many layers should i actually leave? the deep layers are almost like a compacted compost.

Leave it as is and just make sure it is free from debris that should be in the trash (glass, nails, etc.). They love to dig around!

I raked most of mine out, then went back and replaced it with partially composted material. They bulldoze it all over the run.
