Of course the lush grassed run I gave my birds gradually turned to a lovely mud run last year. Tractoring them wasn't an option as I just got the coop/run built in time to get them outta the brooder!

The soil where I am is a delightful hard clay that turns to grease when it gets wet, what's the best idea to get in there to keep the mud down in the coop. Gravel, hay, ??? Help!!! Thanks!!!

I would let it dry and when it does I would put some sand in it. Wait for it to become completely dry before you put it in though other wise it will become worse. If the ground isn't currently frozen, i would cultivate it just to get some drainage in it.

Good Luck,
Mike

Yeah...sand seems to be the best way to go. And with clay, I'd put a base of crushed rock under the sand to help with drainage. Many like the sand 'cause you can literally scoop or rake the poop out like sifting a litter box.
