While the dog stealing the chicken sounds like a very likely scenario, the couple we spoke to said they'd just let their dog out and the chicken was already in the yard. They expected it to fly away. I really don't think anyone snatched her, either. I live in the middle of nowhere and my chicken coop is not visible from the road. Also, I have dogs. They'd never pass up a chance to bark at intruders!

My best guess is that she somehow got frightened and could not find her way back, so she kept wandering. She probably had 2 hours of freedom and she used it!
