Here in our little historical town, there is only one feed/country store withing a thirty minute drive. they sell anything from work clothes, to feed, to garden supplies. It is an atmosphere of an old timey general store, built by a teacher who was tired of getting to the feed store after work only to find it had closed. he stays open later than other feed stores and opens on sundays for a few hours. this has made his store popular with many people who hold jobs off their farms.
I have been going to this store since it opened seven years ago. Two days ago i walked in and started chatting with the owner while i prepared to order feed when i noticed his smile was off. I asked if he was all right and he said fine but there was a saddness in his eyes.
I as I payed for the feed I noticed a sign on the cash register. He is going out of business!
I told him I was sad to see him go and he said he is too. I said the economy is tough and he said he is actualy doin well, but personal issues are forcing him to close.
This is a small town, and one of the oldest towns in Alabama. Well it did not take long for word to get around to me what happened. He is getting a divorce. His wife's family owns a majority of the land most of the little stores and churches sit on. Including his business. There is no land in the center of the town available to move his business to.
I feel for the couple going through this, but I am also rather sad to loose the only feed store in town. It has become a fixture along with the little one room bbq store, small park, and one room library around our town center and courthouse ( the oldest courthouse in the state).
There is no point to this post other to express my grief to loosing one of the town's most popular places.
