Our local feed store still has chicks but no one is buying them. Barred Rocks, RIRs, White and Brown Leghorns and Jerseys. They have dozens and dozens and they're all 4 weeks old and the brooders are getting cramped as they grow.... I bought 8 of the little ones about a week ago and I can't get it out of my mind that these babies may not be purchased.
Once I got them home the first thing I noticed is how flighty the little guys are. They have had no handling by humans other than to be captured. The next thing I noticed is that the 2 brown leghorns I bought were picked on. All their feathers are missing frim their backs just above the tail feathers. I'm hoping this is just feather loss from picking or stress and not some wierd disease I don't know about.
If anyone is in the sacramento area and wants babies or just feels like doing a good deed, please PM me and I'll give you the information of the feed store. They're selling them for 1.99 a piece and at 4 weeks you can pretty much tell the roos from the pullets.

Strange, our feed store makes you pre-order for delivery on a specified date. This allows people who want fewer than 25 to get birds.

They must have a plan for birds that are not sold....

wow, our feed store stocks chicks too, but they never sit that long

they need to put them in a proper environment, if they are picking, they aren't happy.

i'm sure they have a trough around, or a large bin they can fill with shavings.

sure, it cuts into the profit, but it's not right to do that to living breathing creatures.

i live in florida, otherwise i'd go buy some, thats a fantastic bargain.

post up some pics of your chicks, i'd bet it's just picking, nothing too serious.

and they'll come around to you after they get comfortable.

That is sad... my feed store does pre-orders, then they sell extras, but they always go really fast. This year they had a blind duckling (born with no eyes) even he/she went.
