Even as we gathered for my uncle's funeral,
to laugh is ever present in my family. How I
love them.

Several of us were out front of the funeral home,
doing what we do best, which is to laugh, tell jokes
and enjoy each other...

My cousin and his wife had flown in from Florida.
He's telling us how she's old, and getting this Alzheimer's.
(far from it, still young at 40-something and stunning)
BUT...he's letting her plan her own surprise birthday party
for next month. She'll plan it, forget about it and be surprised.
Works perfect...she buys her own Christmas gifts, then forgets
what she got herself. Surprised when she opens it. Just what
she wanted! And my cousin, he gets the credit for it.

That struck me as funny. And I needed the laugh.

I'll say this about my family : We're as close knit as we can
be. Many of us live here, within a few miles of each other.
Others, states away. But just a phone call, or a text. I would be
so lost without my family. Our family reunion can go three days,
easy.

My wife's family...just the complete opposite. We went to her
uncle's funeral a while back...her family actually had name-tags
to wear. When you signed the guestbook, you also wrote out
a name tag. That was funny. Even funnier, it was one of those
bigger funeral homes with two-three funeral viewings at once.
And her older aunts were going from funeral to funeral, comparing
flowers and such. My wife's family...not exactly close.

Spook...from a BIG family.

"A whole family like me."

Spook, I hate that you seem to be losing so many of the "elders" in your family. But it's always so refreshing that your family is able to stay so connected! It's a true definition of "family"!

And thank you for sharing all of this with your BYC "family", cause you should know that you are in our thoughts and prayers when you go through this!

Ah...the elders in my family...How I love each and every
one of them. And my cousins...the bonds between us are
stronger than steel.

The world over, I couldn't find a better family.

And I've tried...in my little town, our fire department, even
our church family. We've made roots here that run deep.

Even here, at this little chicken forum,...there's some strong
roots growing. Not just for me, but for many. Friendships that
are as close as any family.
