Safe leaves in compost pile

I have some Purpleleaf Sandcherry trees that I plan on pruning this week. As well as some skip Laurel bushes. I was informed not to feed these to my tortoises because they are toxic. Would it be safe to put them in my compost pile that the chickens dig through?

It would be nice if anybody had information on this. I am thinking about getting rid of all the skip Laurel bushes. Any ideas on alternatives? I want something Evergreen probably. But I'm also thinking about red twig dogwood's.
