Safety of using bird netting on inside a run?

We're having a lot of trouble with sparrows so we're trying to cover our entire run with bird netting but it's hard to secure it in some areas because parts of the run are hard to reach from the outside. The run is made from steel welded wire fencing with a 2"x4" mesh. If we attach bird netting to the inside of the fence could our chickens get stuck in it?

I know what netting you speak of as we use it to cover our strawberries. The chickens can't get to it though. I would not want to use that if they could. Can you use thin rope, fishing line, or something like that to attach it to the outside?
