Salmon Faverolles

Mothergoose, I may get some of yours in Spring. I emailed you a while back but the ones you had laying were the same line as Jaynie's so I wanted to wait for your others to start laying. So hopefully will be able to get some in Spring. I just love my two faverolle girls, but they are a little stand-off'ish. But when no one is outside I can sit out on the bench and if it is quiet, and I have a snack, they will jump right into my lap. I can catch them and put them in my lap and rub them a bit and they will go to sleep and stay there even if I move my hands. I think it is just that initial picking up that is the problem. They are more cautious. But I have little kids and they spook the chickens because they are so loud and quick. I love to sit out there alone and everyone loves me then. I hate it is getting cold, won't be able to do that very much right now. Hurts my body, I have Fibromyalgia. Anyway. Look forward to getting some eggs in spring. Maybe by then you will be shipping chicks?? That would be even better.

. No rush - I'm actually sort of enjoying having only four birds right now. It's REALLY cut down on my daily tasks

. But at the same time, I'm VERY eager for more Favs. I've even got a few people who want to buy the chicks that hatch! One of them, I want to give a few eggs for one of her broody bantam cochins to incubate.

BTW, mothergoose, I know that you have stock from three different breeders. Do you notice any differences in temperament between the three groups? I adopted a blue salmon cockerel that a friend hatched out of eggs from another line. Unfortunately, he didn't live long enough for me to get a better idea of his personality. He was very calm and docile, but he was also a runt (which was probably what made me pick him) and his broodmates were much more excitable. But as mentioned above, sometimes they calm down after they're let out of close quarters. Just curious if you notice differences between the different lines.

Marie,
Just let me know whenever you are ready in the spring. I am still pondering the whole "chick shipping thing", still not sure about that yet.

Naomi,
For the most part all the salmons that I have are pretty sweet. There is a definete difference in some of the roosters though. Not towards me, but towards each other. The roosters from Catalpa Farms are much more aggressive. I like the more laid back temperment of my other salmon roosters. The roosters I have from Jaynie and Rose Isrigg, have that "ho hum" disposition. Nothing bothers them and they just do what they have to do. The Catalpa farms roosters seem to have to make their presence known and strut all over the place.
The hens are all very sweet.

I have 6 SF pullets, they were the first to lay at 21-22 wks and are the most consistent. what I notice most of all, is that the are very dramatic about laying. they begin fussing and pacing hrs in advance of sitting, and then sit in the boxes for up to 3 hrs, tying up the whole show. Am ready to add more boxes because of the tie-up. The other, standard cochins and Lt. Brahmas, jump in lay the egg and leave, couple cackles and they're done till the next day. The SF are pretty and entertaining but it is the darndest thing. Is anyone else having this experience with their Salmons? Thanx, Debbie

I hardly even know when mine is laying. Unless I see her go into the coop. She is the only one laying so far and has been pretty consistent so far. It really cooled off this past week and has been raining and dreary so she has missed a couple of days but before that laid basically every day. I am waiting on the other fav to start. She should probably start soon but I think the cold weather may hold her up. I don't think mine are dramatic, except when something is after them. They do get a bit over the top but that is a good thing. I will let you know Mothergoose. Jaynie is a great lady and highly recommended you. That means a lot to me. Take care.

Thanks for the 411, mothergoose! My sweet little guy that didn't live long was from Catalpa stock. He was such a love... Beautiful blue salmons, and unbelievably awesome hatch rate! I got my guy from a friend who hatched 12 chicks from the 14 eggs she was sent! I was so sad to lose him

.

Everyone whose Favs were originally from Rose's stock says that they're the sweetest, gentlest, friendliest birds they've ever had. And of course they're show-stoppers, too! I can't wait to hatch more of these lovely characters!!! I guess with only one cockerel in your Isgrigg brood, he's got his work cut out

... Glad to know that the Isgrigg roosters are chill
