Salmonella cross contamination?

My daughter is revamping her turtle tank, removing all the rocks and sand. We were going to put the sand in the chicken run and the rocks in the yard. Both animals carry salmonella - but will exposure to the sand/rocks from the turtle tank adversely affect my chickens?

I would not use the sand for the chickens. Just my opinion!

If you want to use it, wash it with a bleach solution to sanitize.
