Has anyone else purchased poultry from Rochester Hatchery, in Westlock Alberta this spring, if you were among the rest of us that have had chicks sent with this serious bacteria Salmonella Enteritidis Please let me know.

Has anyone else purchased poultry from Rochester Hatchery, in Westlock Alberta  this spring, if you were among the rest of us that have had chicks sent with this serious bacteria   Salmonella Enteritidis   Please let me know.

I purchased 43 chicks from Rochester,arrived May 4th. My 2 year old got really sick,we didn't know why. Until Facebook of all places notified me of the SE. It took Rochester 3 weeks to send a letter to my house. Meanwhile I got on it sooner and got the text kit from the lab. They tested positive, my son tested positive as well. We had to kill them all and dispose of our poor young chickens as a biohazard.

Jenny, so sorry, what a mess! Welcome here though, and I hope you have a much better experience with chickens next time! I've ordered chicks from several certified US hatcheries over the last twenty+ years, and never had to deal with that! In general, babies and toddlers shouldn't handle the birds, because it's hand to mouth before you can even wash them up! Mary
