Hello! I found this forum today after my husband gave me the thumbs up for chickens and was very pleased to find so much useful information! I'm so new to the idea that I'm not even sure what breed I want, what breeds are compatible, or anything but I'm looking forward to figuring it all out.

Hmm, I'm a mother of two elementary aged children, two dogs, and 1.5 cats (we had a feral cat adopt our tame cat but she only tolerates us) here in the Mid-West. I enjoy writing, drawing, and am an avid gardener. I'm hoping to integrate some laying hens (but the bantams are SOOOO pretty!) into my routine this year and bees next year. The hardest part is figuring out how to garden around the critters so that they all stay 'out of sight, out of mind' of our neighbors (I live in town). Zoning allows for it all but I'm sure you all know how that goes!

Yep, that about sums it up.

from South Carolina!

Second: For breeding hens and bantams, I would get a mixed flock! My cochins lay everyday, but they are small eggs. I would also recomend EEs (Easter Eggers) for a nice colorful laying flock. About your garden; if it is not to big you could go buy some chicken wire and gate it. I hope you have fun more than anything thouhg. And, beware of types of people like us, because eventually you will get more chickens and we will too!
